I tend to lead a project in a portfolio with a logo if it was a logo that I did. But I've seen design firms lead with logos they were not the originators of. (Coke, Sony, ect.) I'm sure this is for instant recognition and legitimacy but doesn't that seem a bit disingenuous when your company is in the business of designing logos?
I can understand in a client section showing these company logos for recognition but in your work portfolio?
seems odd to show the logo by itself if you didn't modify it/develop it in some way. I only show the logo if I made it.
what if I did do the coke and sony logos...?
I would never, ever, ever show logos for companies like that, because I'm less worried about the company coming after me, and more worried that whoever saw my portfolio would immediately think I was a tool.
I think you want to tell your clients that you are a logo creator? That being the case, would one logo wouldn't communicate your big idea?

Just try to be clear what your work is, or, I suppose, make it ambiguous but be clear when talking to people.
We've done some work for large brands and show what we did, like the website, print details, etc., but never just the bw logo by itself.
This is a tough area when you do work for a large client. But if they are large enough, I think most people will assume that you did not design the logo but that the logo needed to be present on the things you designed.
Logos in a client list to show immediate brand recognition: yes.
Showing logos you didn't create/work on in your portfolio: no.
k. what if... the design firm is more than just a design firm and offers enterprise software solutions to these big named companies as well. The only visual they have for that project in there portfolio IS the company logo because there isn't really a visual to work with?
can you show us some examples... what do you mean by lead the portfolio with a logo?
