Agency Sites - Fancy or Simple?

Which is better, fancy site or simple to let the work do the talking? There seems to be a trend for the latter these days, what do you all think?

isn't the point of an agency site to appeal to potential clients? Yes, you showcase your work and strive to make it look perfect, but your main goal is to generate leads and attract new clients. So, I guess it all depends on your target market...

NOTE! The audience is potential CLIENTS.... not other designers, unless you're a post-production house or retoucher,etc....
Imagine a potential client.... with his email program on, MS-Office running Word, Excel and Powerpoint in the background... and 5 browser windows open, comparing a bunch of agencies on his small monitor, one of them has some weird flash thing that's slowing his computer down... guess which one gets cut first....
Also, don't forget the power of case studies, business ROI stuff... they may love your work, but they have to SELL you to their finance and business partners too....

I've recently been toying with the idea that beyond a certain level, clients aren't able to evaluate the quality of work.
I don't know much about movies. I know that Avatar is a better movie than Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. I can't evaluate the difference between The Departed and Deer Hunter. I think our clients are a lot like that, once the work is "good enough" they don't get much else from looking at the portfolio.
Oddly, most agency sites focus too much on the work, and fail to consider what their potential clients actually use to evaluate the agency.

I've heard client discussions about choosing an agency... sitting next to the guy on the phone was interesting.. he was more concerned with the Appropriateness of the work than it's absolute quality.... and he really, really wanted to know if agencies had worked with companies like his, or at least in his industry... and he was wary of what he called "creative crazies just trying to win awards"

doesnt matter as long as it designed well and caters for your target market which in this case is probably your clientel or potential clientel and/or the industry they specialise in
