I've recently been toying with the idea that beyond a certain level, clients aren't able to evaluate the quality of work.
I don't know much about movies. I know that Avatar is a better movie than Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel. I can't evaluate the difference between The Departed and Deer Hunter. I think our clients are a lot like that, once the work is "good enough" they don't get much else from looking at the portfolio.
Oddly, most agency sites focus too much on the work, and fail to consider what their potential clients actually use to evaluate the agency.
