I went, graduated recently. Amazing experience, nose down in the studio for two years. Great creative people in ten departments.
Dont go if you want to teach, there is no undergraduates to get teaching experience with. Although for 2-d this might not be as big of a deal.
The campus is beautiful, like harry potter for artists. Posh residential neighborhood surrounding. Detroit is about 15/20 minutes away, in all its post-apocalyptic glory. Pontiac, equally desolate, is just 10 min north.
Its cold, but the studios are heated.
Which department are you planning on applying to?

Cranbrook is in the middle of the fanciest, most expensive old-money suburb in Detroit. So, the surrounding area is beautiful.

what's the surrounding area like? i mean, i'm sure you're nose down in work, but i've never been to michigan, so.........
is it worth going there if you're eventually looking to teach, or more for personal creativity and gain?

Most people rave about the experience. I went to Cranbrook for High School, so I knew people who went to the Art Academy years ago. Cranbrook is a great place and a wonderful atmosphere.
Over the years I've met some great artists there, like Ralph Gibson, Duane Michals, Robert Heineken, and quite a few others.
I even met Yoko Ono there!
So, if you can swing it financially, go!

I went. It was good if you want to be left alone and do work for two years, and be surrounded by some talented people. Also depends what dept. you go into. 2-d is pretty sweet.
