I went. It was good if you want to be left alone and do work for two years, and be surrounded by some talented people. Also depends what dept. you go into. 2-d is pretty sweet.

I know a few alum who were instructors at my alma mater.

Most people rave about the experience. I went to Cranbrook for High School, so I knew people who went to the Art Academy years ago. Cranbrook is a great place and a wonderful atmosphere.
Over the years I've met some great artists there, like Ralph Gibson, Duane Michals, Robert Heineken, and quite a few others.
I even met Yoko Ono there!
So, if you can swing it financially, go!

what's the surrounding area like? i mean, i'm sure you're nose down in work, but i've never been to michigan, so.........
is it worth going there if you're eventually looking to teach, or more for personal creativity and gain?

Cranbrook is in the middle of the fanciest, most expensive old-money suburb in Detroit. So, the surrounding area is beautiful.

I went, graduated recently. Amazing experience, nose down in the studio for two years. Great creative people in ten departments.
Dont go if you want to teach, there is no undergraduates to get teaching experience with. Although for 2-d this might not be as big of a deal.
The campus is beautiful, like harry potter for artists. Posh residential neighborhood surrounding. Detroit is about 15/20 minutes away, in all its post-apocalyptic glory. Pontiac, equally desolate, is just 10 min north.
Its cold, but the studios are heated.
Which department are you planning on applying to?

What am I to take from the curt Mr. gramme—does he not care for the style of education and/or the work coming from Cranbrook?

@persona,
I commute to Downtown Detroit 5 days a week. The downtown area of Detroit is mostly a safe place, although the outlying sprawl is where the worst of it is. In any direction immediately outside of the downtown area it gets pretty bad. Like any major city you learn which parts to avoid. I'm not denying the truth of that comment, but to ask how a city like that can even exist in the western nation well... Detroit's certainly up there with it's less desirable qualities... but so is every other major city in the US.
- cool story brah... no disrespect but your wrong - atlanta baltimore DC New York Boston...nothing like detroit - not even closepersona_non_grata
- uhm, quite sure all of those cities have slums and/or ghettos of some sort.d_rek
- All respectfully their own, of coursed_rek
- o some sort yes - end of the similarity. But no ur right; every major city in America is as bad as detroitpersona_non_grata
- I didn't say 'as bad as'... i just said they all have their problems.d_rek
- come on... then what are u saying? U got some good work in your portfolio thopersona_non_grata

FIver, Cranbrook is in a beautiful location, one of the richest areas of the US, and you will have the oppurtunity to meet these people, because Cranbrook allows to bridge the gap between the patrons and artists. But patrons being patrons, they can be a bit irritating, or a LOT of fun.
Anyways, when you see Cranbrook, its totally isolated if you dont have a car. Detroit and its suburbs is CAR CENTRAL, Public trans. sucks, and if you need to get materials to do work, without a car, its a pain. But Cranbrook is also the kind of place that if you needed to borrow the schools pickup truck, the school will help you facilitate it.
- I didn't go there but used to spend a lot of time on the campus -- it's such a beautiful place.Josev

Plus the buildings were designed Eliel Saarinen, and its pretty much a sculpture garden filled with Carl Milles statues. I mean, its pretty wonderful to visit. I would recommend just visiting and meeting Elliott Earls, and you will know your answer, if you can't visit, call and call until you can speak with him and ask him questions. If you are completely serious about going, meeting him will help your chances immensely.
One last thing, Earls is a cool dude, but he's also very eccentric, and if you think about it, you're gonna spend two years under that guys thumb, just make sure you click.

I believe Matt Owens from recent "High production value royalty-free design assets" went there.
