    @persona,

    I commute to Downtown Detroit 5 days a week. The downtown area of Detroit is mostly a safe place, although the outlying sprawl is where the worst of it is. In any direction immediately outside of the downtown area it gets pretty bad. Like any major city you learn which parts to avoid. I'm not denying the truth of that comment, but to ask how a city like that can even exist in the western nation well... Detroit's certainly up there with it's less desirable qualities... but so is every other major city in the US.
