So I'm in SF now. Life is good but I've always wanted to live in Europe (spain, italy, netherlands). I'm growing tired of the American "live to work" culture.
Ideally: I'd like to put in a 5 hr day, go to crazy festivals, hit on beautiful women, stroll the pebbled streets, lunch at the local cafe, bike the countryside etc...
1. How easy/hard is the transition?
2. How easy is it to land a design gig at an agency?

netherlands would be meh
fuck italy
go spain- 27. I know restaurant-level Spanish.hellogoodbye

Don't get me wrong SF is awesome. But it lacks passion IMO. I see it in Europeans who come here....the way they communicate; its fascinating and–dare i say–romantic. I don't want to go anywhere that has English as a primary language.
- ...and don't get me started on the hipsters.hellogoodbye
- romantic? so what he means is, he wants to bang hot european chicks. ;)OSFA
- haha romantic doesn't just apply in the sexual sense. Conversations on poetry, music, going dancing, fine wine on an afternoon...all romantic.hellogoodbye
- oh, nevermind... he's gay. ;)OSFA
- they are probably enthusiastic because they are on holidaysclearThoughts
- I actually love San Francisco, my boyfriend is from Norway and he loves SF more than Oslo (expensive as fuck).ediot

I did it for close to 5 years, finally Finland kicked me out and told me not really to try that again, as I pushed my luck a few times. Best time ever!
I will say, the grass is always greener on the other side. Moving around tends to get old after a while. Unless you are a youngster, then go crazy.
Make sure you have your work permits, or a job that pays under the table already set up before you leave, it can be ugly.

too many 'grass' words in this thread. I'm sure edd-e will be here shortly...

You can't do this in America?

I have one word for you - Belgium.
Great women, beer, and everyone speaks fluent English.

Everybody speaks english in the Netherlands, but screw your 12-17 o'clock mentality! I just finished a 9-21:30 day :|

I lived in Rome for a while. It was cool and all. But I was glad to get back home.
Unless you are fluent in the local language it's hard to really engage in the romantic, philosophical conversations that you are looking for. I can speak some Italian but my family (whom I learned Italian from) is from northern Italy and the dialect is very different from the Roman dialect. I had a difficult time conversing.

I do this in Austin, TX. everyday my friend. It's all perspective.

Sounds like you want to live in the Netherlands ...
Alright so i don't make 5hour days (more like double that sometimes) but,
I do go to crazy festival in and outside the Netherlands
I did hit on beautiful women until I stuck with one
I stroll the pebbled street at nighttime
I do have lunch at the local cafe almost everyday
I do bike everyday, although not the countryside, but I do go there on weekends when I can, it's not too far.Amsterdam, yes. Don't come as a tourist, b/c you'll hate it eventually, come to live and learn to avoid the tourists and love the city.
But then again, I thought you could do all this in SF as well? Or am I completely wrong here. I loved SF though for the 1 week I was there.
- Any place can be cool as a tourist...El_Montr0
- yea you can do all this in SF, but its still very American, insanely expensive to even breathe, rest closes at 10, and economy is dwindling.hellogoodbye

Moving to Europe to enjoy 5hr working days? Dream on.
Newsflash, America isn't the only place people work hard.
- that's so truelukus_W
- No, but the Europeans are more efficient and get the work done in less time.5tim
- AND are more productive due to actually getting a decent number of vacation days to recover, mentally.5tim
- yeah, they don't wank about on qbn for hours at work.
oh wait.bigtrickagain - Oh that's different. You need to move to Australia to REALLY commit to your QBN habit.MrT

alternatively, you could go to prison. let's see:
I'd like to put in a 5 hr day: you can put in a 0 hour day!
go to crazy festivals: no
hit on beautiful women: no, but maybe beautiful men will hit on you!
stroll the pebbled streets: yes! except they are slab concrete, but same thing.
lunch at the local cafe: yes! for free!
bike the countryside: no, but they have a free gym!- The USA has more of it's population in prison than any other country in the world.lukus_W
- hahaha awesome.hellogoodbye
- It's healthy too. Regular sleeping hours, diet balanced by dietitian, hard mattress, regular sex if you're luckyraf
