I lived in Rome for a while. It was cool and all. But I was glad to get back home.
Unless you are fluent in the local language it's hard to really engage in the romantic, philosophical conversations that you are looking for. I can speak some Italian but my family (whom I learned Italian from) is from northern Italy and the dialect is very different from the Roman dialect. I had a difficult time conversing.
