How many fonts is too many to have on one computer?

open?

Activated? I'd say 100. But, you can never have too many installed.

I have exactly 85 installed, all OpenType. I still have about 400 non-OT in my file vault, but I am moving towards only using OT fonts from now on.

yes, I have almost 16k here in our work library - but only open them as-needed.

Hey here's a slightly related font mgmt question. I use FontExplorer. A while back I tried to do a font purge and deleted all the fonts I never use. I didn't delete the source file, just removed them from FontExplorer.
Then the next time I turned my computer on, all those fonts were back and turned on.
Any ideas?

i think there's a 'delete files' option, as opposed to 'remove from fontexplorer, that puts it in the trash. .

What about system fonts that are never used for anything? I can't delete them, but when I turn them off and restart, they're turned back on again.

oh, yeah i've never been able to get rid of those.

I mean things like "BlackOak Std." I never have, and never will use that font. I think it's part of the default Adobe bundle. I don't want to see it.

Or Copperplate. How I loathe Copperplate.

Gramme - grab this PDF from Extensis; tells you which fonts are system and application installs, which are mandatory, and how to manage (with Suitcase of course).

I've decided this year to go totally legal, and open source/free if possible.

20-30 active, not including the shitty system fonts that Apple installs.

I'm slowly purging my computer of all the fonts I'll never use. I had a techie friend give me a DVD of fonts that he'd sorted out with no conflicts... Over 20,000 fonts. My aim is to get that to under 1,000 decent fonts that I might use.
I love modernist design, but seriously, shouldn't each brand speak in it's own unique voice. (If half the people in the world spoke in the same accent with the same pitch it'd be extremely boring!)
- My aim is to be totally legal within 3 years, but I generally only use licensed fonts for client work anyway.Amicus
