Good look back on Photoshop over it history, has it really been 20 years, DAM!
I got a good look at photoshop in 91 at college, but didn't really start using it until 96. It was the first programme I really got my head around and found it just so intuitive to use.

Me too. I started in school with version 2.0. No layers yet, just paste controls.
- I still think version 3 was the best upgrade any program ever had.CyBrain
- v3 arrived just in time for my first PS course.. layers were a big thing.ribit
- oh man, i remember pre-layer ps. back when 'undo' was the only thing that saved you. (other than saving out a million versions, which would take forever to save)jazmine

Can't believe they waste time on that 3D shit when there are so many basic things it does wrong.- +1Mishga
- Yeah, your image editing application does everything so much better. Oh wait, you're just a whining cunt.monospaced
- Remember that comment next time you criticise a movie. It makes no fucking senseBIGGESTDOGINTHEWORLD
- What movie have I criticized?monospaced

Anyone remember the crashes PH used to have in the OS8, 9 days, I lost a weeks worth of work with a corrupt file, I went bloody crazy at the time, And I forgot that Photoshop was exclusive on Mac when it first come out, no PC?
- To this very day, after a few operations or brush strokes, I save. Sometimes I instinctively Save As. It's a curse.monospaced

- Paranoid PH Users everywhere.pillhead
- PH?monospaced
- I save like a MOFO too...Ambushstudio

I started with 2.0 also...I must have been 10 or 11.
On another note, those Windows screengrabs make me physically uncomfortable. They should have used the Mac versions. Oh well.
- Those blue bars are driving me insane. How do people work in Windows?monospaced
- Yes, I was thinking the same thing!rson

I agree. The article would have been better and more consistent if all the screen grabs were from Macintosh OS's rather than Windows. I assume those who would be most nostalgic about Photoshop (ie. the audience for the article) are predominantly Mac users. Or this could just be the bubble I live in?

I remember developing film in those wee cans, and making prints with enlargers. Color was a pain in the ass!

What it fails to mention is that all versions since maybe 7 have been utterly, utterly pointless iterations in a money making monopoly.
- I would not want to go back to Photoshop 7!boobs
- I have it at home and does everything I still need.moth
- If you can do without shape layers and smart objects, you need to update yourself on new features.CyBrain
- not true at all, mothmonospaced
- I kind of agree. 7 at home and I never long for more.monNom

When I first started using PhotoShop, when I hit save, the computer would grind away for a full half-hour, during which I could do nothing with the machine. Hitting save was a huge commitment!

In version 2 with System 7, it was a considerable drain on RAM to make a complex selection in a large file.

I started with Photoshop 1.0+ and before even that, an app that fitted on a single 1.3mb floppy called Imagestudio. I forget who it was by now, and there have been countless apps called Imagestudio since, but the one I'm talking about was the bare chassis upon which they then built Photoshop. It was greyscale only, and it had pencil and brush tools, plus a smudge finger and a crude cloning tool that meant you could do 3D-looking worms of brush sized lumps of your image.

^ Even though the process led to interruption in Thomas’ thesis work, the brothers released “Image Pro” in 1988.
That's what I was thinking of, not Imagestudio. I had that running on an Apple LC2 with 4mb ram and a 40mb HD.
