After more than a decade of sitting in a poorly constructed flimsy Ply Craft knock off I'm seriously considering getting the real deal.
The only thing that is stopping me is a friend bought one and he said it really isn't that comfortable. Now if I'm going to spend used car money on a chair I'm going to have to sit in it everyday for the next 50 years to get my moneys worth.
Do any of you have one? Is it comfortable to you or just a piece of art or status symbol?

It's comfortable to my taste. I believe that's part of it's endurance.

Saarinen's womb chair is a similar alternative.

It's comfortable and art and I love it. The only decent piece of furniture I own, and the only thing I'll have to sit/sleep on for first few days when I move to a new flat next week..

Both models are fairly easy to find and try out.

I don't think so, but the one I've sat in is pretty old.(and has been repaired)

I'm thinking it has to be more comfy than what I've been sitting in for the last decade...
it's approved by GOB but I'd rather lay on the floor if the couch isn't available.

you can get pretty good quality knockoffs from http://www.evincodesign.com/. they have pics of the actual product on their flickr as well. i might buy the pk31 sofa from them because i am never going to have $30k+ to buy the real thing, or even a used one.

- that's a great price on the chair but I would always know I was sitting in a RIP. the couch i would buy in a sec!fooler2

They are terribly comfortable. The new ones use foam whereas the older (original) runs used down. All the same, the new ones are very well made and very comfortable.
My only issue is that there are so many knock offs of this chair. Sure its a classic, but there are many others out there for the same price that are not so common.
Check out Ligne Roset, B&B Italia, or even Roche Bobois.
I picked up this gorgeous chair for around 3600 USD, slightly cheaper than the Eames. Made of Alcantara as well, super elegant and contemporary.
- also, Ligne Roset custom makes everything so you can pick almost any color/fabric they offer. Downside: 4 month turnaround.formula

Wayne Coyne of the flaming lips also has my ply craft chair but he couldn't even afford the ottoman...

this should fetch a few more bucks when I include it in my craigslist ad.

i have to agree on the not really comfy fact. you can't really rest your head for example. one of the best design pieces ever though.

i have an old reproduction which is pretty comfortable, and a new nock off that is not nearly as comfortable. neither is as good a sit as an original eames.
