So me and the woman are probably moving cross country (NY-->Portland) in the next couple months.
Trying to figure out the best (ie cheapest) way to move all our stuff. I have an SUV and was going to drive it out with all our breakables (tv, computer, fabrege eggs, etc). Going to sell all our furniture but need to get books/ clothes/ random stuff out there cheaply.
We also have 2 cats & a dog to deal with.
Anyone have experience doing this with minimal stress & cost?

Amtrak. Box it up, take it to the station. They put it on a palette and plastic wrap it...you retrieve on the other side. It's ridiculously cheap.
- ...not advisable solution for cats and dogs however. :)monkeyshine

get a moving van and a couple friends - the friends drive the van, you pay for their lodging and you have an epic road trip together.
I helped my brother move from the midwest to LA, it was a great time.
something like this

- leave the dog in the moving van?flashbender
- I kid, I kid. You raise a good point. I have no answer other than no one stole my bro's stuff when we did itflashbender

I used this, it is affordable and they drop the boxes off and when you are done packing them they move all the stuff for you. You also don't have to rush to load eveything like with a U-Haul.

I did CO > OH this past spring and sold my furniture, hooked up a Uhaul trailer to my SUV and moved with a dog. It was fairly simple because I didn't have to pay for mileage on the trailer, etc. I also drove straight through - so I didn't have to worry about pets and hotels/motels...
You can find pet friendly over nights here: http://www.petswelcome.com/
Good luck!

this is just a personal experience, but what i did was packed my stuff into my car, and shipped my car on a car carrier. it was about 1k. compare it to a uhaul+gas+hotels+food, it was a third of the price, plus you can fit much more stuff in it than otherwise, because there are no people on board.
once you have driven a packed car across the country once, you are reluctant to do it again.
plus a warning, Portland has filled up with former Californians and New Yorkers over the years (especially Californians), forced up land prices, changed the local culture a bit, and many locals are really resentful...I have driven through Oregon with both California and New York plates...and have run into some problems....perhaps it was just bad luck though, you never know.
- My ladies from out there so hopefully that will soften the negativity towards my transplant ass!BK

Pack/box everything yourself, hire a reliable trucking service to haul it cross country, pick up a couple Mexican dudes hanging out by the Uhaul place to load the truck for a reasonable price.
