Do you find that when working as a freelancer for agencies/clients who have long pay cycles (60 days, for example) you usually just have to deal with it and plan for it, or are you able to negotiate different terms?

It's always possible to negotiate.

The bigger they are, the more difficult it will be to negotiate quicker payment.
Though I have called up the managing partner of an ad agency that hired us to ask where our fucking cheque was. After waiting 75 days for payment on a net 30 invoice we got paid that day.

i work for a close friends company, still waiting for money from october, that's what he gets for being bought out and having 80 some employees now though i guess.... slow payments are savings plans, in fact.... until i just wrote that, i was afraid i was broke for some reason. i wasn't even accounting for this money in my head.

Yeah, also waiting for money from the Oct/Nov time period. Been polite as I can be in asking without becoming a pest. Just curious if anyone has overcome the accounts payable dept. issue consistently.

I'm in the same bote, that is something I'm negotiating with one of the agencies... wish me luck

Waiting a lot longer than that for a few clients. This economy isn't helping anything.

My last freelance in-house gig ended nastily after a series of month where they paid on the 30th day (before becoming past due on the 31st) I ended up going 60 days without pay, then 30 days for the next paycheck. Going further, I dont think there is any way I will agree to such long terms on full-time freelance ever again. I
hated that place anyway...felt like I was working in a Shanghai ipod factory.- If you went back, it'd be iPads now. ;)harlequino

It's amazing how work always needs to be completed in a rush but payment always seems to be a long painful process. I recently got a tip from someone. Haven't tried this yet but it was suggested to put on your invoice something like 10% off your invoice if payment is made in full within two weeks. Probably won't work but I'm going to give it a try.

well, in good news, was just told that a check has been cut and goes out tomorrow.
Also, been sipping vodka so suddenly everything is kind of ok.

There aren't any rules in my experience. Big or small, companies vary between paying on receipt (as I ask) to 30, 60, however-many days. Just keep invoicing and reminding and always keep something in the bank...
