Ive just upgraded to CS4 and wondered if anyone had opinions about the new 3d stuff? I had to do visualisation for a client and thought this would be the perfect reason to try out the 3d capabilities. I was pretty disappointed with it really, my computer kept taking absolutely ages to render (working on a macbook pro with 2.8 ghz and 4gb ram, no bean tin) when moving a few layers at a time there and i couldnt figure out how to move the camera angle (if you can). Anyone know of any resources to learn a bit more about it if its actually worth doing - i hoped for an after effects style interface

i have a macbookpro intel, the first model that came out in 2006 fully maxed at 2gigs ram and 2ghz.. i am slightly less than you..

i been seeing a lot of slow times on pshop yes, but not to the extent you are. i just started to learn 3D using Modo from luxology. the file sizes are seriously tiny.. and i can create lot so far and import into photoshop CS3.

in terms of colour in and adding textures i think that falls on your creativity level, as far as me i am super ultra beginner at photoshop.

i recommend you to learn 3D just as i am.. there is a few free resources out there that you can easily pick up in a few days. it took me 3 days to get the understanding of 3D in general.

here is a few places you can download free apps that can maybe hlp you get to where you want to be.

    Google SketchUp - http://sketchup.google.com/ (free)

    Blender - http://www.blender.org/download/… (free)

    Modo - http://www.luxology.com/trymodo/… ($25 License 30 days)

i suggest you create your 3D meshes outside in a 3D environment and then bring the saved 3D files into phototshop and then do your magic there rather than creating a 3D object in a 2D environment you will have problems and thus computer crashes and slowing down.

best of luck. i know what you are going thru even more so as my puter is older and slower.. there is always a way.. to achieve creativity.

    • 2gigs as opposed to 4gigs is a big differencefadein11

    which did you use, epill?

Ive been breaking into blender a bit lately, but its quite complex. How is Modo?

i use mode everyday since i got it around 18 hours every day. i love it, as i stated the file sizes are tiny, rendering i cant do it crashes my laptop but in turtorial the guy has the new mbp with max everything and says in the tute it runs perfect!! so i think i need to upgrade but with no income still.. and tax time coming around i will have to hold off til i can figure out a new way around it..

i tried blender.. its not for me.. its does what modo does but is more like zbrush, its more a sculpting app than a straight subdivision and modeling app at least for me.. im sure i have it backwards as 3D heads will most likely correct me on this..

its been around 3 weeks since i started 3D and i feel thatthe last 10+ years of learning vector was wasted away, as modo is light years ahead of illustrator.. also working in modo is amazing.. it does what i want it to do its almost an extension of me..

i really like that... also modo is key command heavy which for me is pure gold as i love key commands.. takes a lil getting used to as they are opposite of adobe key commands.. but very worth it.

i took the 30 day demo. and as i have now 10 days left.. im trying to super maximize my work in it and try everything the app has.. it has a lot but its visually easy to navigate around unlike lets say maya... which is a beast!!!

    :)

    • cheers, e. ill give modo a trybaseline_shift
    • you can't get anything to render? even a simple phong shaded sphere? that wouldn't inspire me with confidence.monNom

I really do not see the point is 3D in Photoshop, Why! I tried to do a simple Glass 3D Minimal Ray-trace render in PH and not only did it take forever to do anything 40min and counting, the result where crap. I did the same thing in Cinema 4D and it took 5 minute to render, and the result where as expected, it looked like glass.

It's shit like this I get sick of seeing in Adobe products, why don't they try and make there products more useful like a dedicated version of PH targeted for Web Design. Rant Over.

    • create in C4D and render further in photoshop.. not create in photoshop n render.e-pill
    • Yeah, Thanks E-Pill

Garbage, it's a pain in the arse to control and runs/renders like a dog.

  • orrinward20

Photoshop's 3D is so far behind Fatpaint's raytracing it's embarrassing.

How else will they maintain an expensive upgrade cycle, other than by shoving unwanted garbage into their increasingly bloated ware?

The 3d thing is a REALY dire example of this, mind - total waste of a menu option.

    • Agreed, no one asked for this.
Photoshop is a horrible jack of all trades as it is.
