I need to record a tv segment and extract to my computer. The show is live won't be replayed on any web format.
I can't figure out how to hack in to my cable box to extract the show. Is there another way?
Not sure if I can redirect the cable feed to my computer without buying stuff.
Suggestions?

My cable box has a single firewire jack which is pretty easy to hook up and record in OS X... what service are you on? I take it there's no FW jack or you probably would've found it.

Last resort: use a camcorder and record the show. I know its ghetto, but if you can't find another way...

I had a PC with Windows Media Center that had a tv tuner card so I could tune it to my local cable and use it as a DVR

Many of those boxes block that sort of thing. Time Warner for example.

You could go to best buy get one of those USB thingys that have a coax input on it, record and then return the usb thing.

also if you already subscribe to DVR services many of them offer to burn your recordings in order to free up space

Really? Thats interesting because my DVR cant record or save that much shows.

Sorry I searched but couldn't find anything for USB. I was surprised to find the FW on mine, it's just the basic thing from Comcast. Turned out you could connect them, download some little app to decode the signal and record it in VLC.

i have a slightly older one (no longer on their site). its a small set-top box. you plug cable into it and then run firewire to pc. with software you can view / record and save file. i dont use it so you are welcome to borrow it. not sure when you need to record. im downtown BK and work midtown west.
