Former Colleagues

I just realized that more than half of my colleagues at university have sorta left the design field. Some are now making crappy jewelry on Etsy and considering themselves to be born-again artists. Some are resigned to work in stationery stores. Others just left the workforce completely, event though they either didn't have children, or their kids are now in school all day, so the excuse is invalid.
This is especially alarming because, while there were 48 applicants in the freshman class, only 17 of us were allowed through the program after sophomore portfolio review, and only 13 ended up graduating.
It's weirdly disappointing, and somewhat unsettling to know that I don't have the comfort of my allies that survived 4 years in a rigorous Visual Communication program to continue with me in the working world.
Have your experiences been similar?

Most of my class are successful designers. We had great instructors.
- We had great instructors too. Sorta besides the point, man.era4O4

not I. Most of my colleagues are still designing and doing some really cool work. It sucks to hear that people spent time and money to just toss it all away. I guess it wasn't their passion.

strange... I went to art school.... people there thought I was a complete sell-out when I started working for ad agencies and design firms.... nothing was more corrupt than a paycheck to some of these people....
