Website with no pictures

A friend of mine what me to design him a website, simple you'd think but he's a carpenter who wants to advertise his skills to attract some new clients. Thing is at the moment he has no photos or pictures, so he's asked for a text based website, which has made things a little interesting.
Could anyone aid me by pointing me in the direction of some good text based websites which i can use to aid me in designing one myself.

While it might be interesting to have these limitations for you, as a designer; I don't think the limitations are necessarily going to help your friend find clients.
Ask him to come back to you once he's thought it through properly and has some photos.

Tell him to just take happy snaps with any old camera, you can process/crop them for him. There is a certain honesty about dodgy pics sometimes. Could work.

I've told him he need photos but still he wants someone now. He's willing to pay me to make him a website now and then another in a few months when he has photos.
Trust me guys, i've tried to explain but he's impossible!

... ask him if he's ever seen the plans for a house... or a new addition... just in text...
... then laugh and get back to wandering...

... this kind of request is asking you to do the near impossible etc... If you want to represent someone in just text... hire a fucking copy write.

can you not istock some wood, tool and stuff images as a more thematic style than strict 'here's a job i did and here's my ute'?

It seems that "under construction" sites seem to be a common theme for carpenters lol.
i'd do what airey suggests, get a nice shot or shots from istock, put that on the page with a nice logo and his contact info

What's so hard about doing a site with no images? It's a little odd yes, but it's essentially just a large business card on the interwebs. Handymen, carpenters, etc rarely get jobs based off their "portfolio of work" anyway– it's all about the impression and who you know.
I'll try and hunt for some links, but my instinct would be to go hyper abstract. If you're dying to have a picture, call him in and get a nice headshot.
I mean hell, your site is all text too ya know! :)

Describe his work. Describe the fine cuts, the materials, the texture... Describe how his asscrack shows when he is working.

If the end result of his trade is something that can best be experienced first hand, otherwise by visual representation – a website with no images doesn't sound like the best idea.
Oh, I see... you've all already said that. Maybe I'll go post a picture of a cat somewhere or something.
