I want about 24 inches. I need it to be great for color correcting. I want to spend around 200 dollars.
All the other threads on this are shit.
Who has one they swear by?

Look for a monitor which uses IPS panels .. the standard on budget screens is TN type. There's a decently priced Dell available for around your budget which fits the bill but I think it's much smaller (20/21 inches). Can't remember the model number, but will post it if I remember/find it.

What is IPS? What are the things to look for in an LCD as far as numbers and internal parts go?
I have had an imac for 3 years I am out of the loop!

"be great for color correcting"
$200 seams a bit low, if you want GREAT.

Okay okay. i am open to the idea of my budget being absurd. But I want a good compromise in both directions of cost and quality. I can flex either way a bit.

"All the other threads on this are shit..."
can i get a reason why on this?
or do you usually find it a viable tactic to trash the very community's past responses in hopes of getting new, possibly better information while somehow accomplishing something absurd with a price point as low as that?

Version3. I apologize for this miscommunucation.
The other threads are fine - they just were not focused on what I wanted to focus on.
Perhaps my price point is absurdly low, but I am absurdly broke.
I think QBN is a great resource for many things and I have been enjoying reading and posting for a good 7 or 8 years.

We use dells. for the price they are pretty consistent. We've tried many brands and price points before and now we just stick to dell it's easier. 400-600 USD for a primary, 200 for a secondary.

Dell 2407WFP or 2408WFP

Aren't wide gamut Dells, ie. 2408 oversaturated? I returned mine because of the ridiculously strong reds I couldn't dial down in any mode.

I just got an LG W2361V 23" HD lcd for £150. I use it for playing xbox and the a quality is stunning. I connect it to the imac when working too and it looks great. Highly recommended

i think the wide-gamut monitors look great, but i find them difficult to design on, because you can achieve subtle contrasts/gradients that no one on a normal monitor will ever see. a bit like the problem of mixing audio on high end speakers, that will be listened to on headphones.

the PVA panel Dells are oversaturated, but you can fix it with a colorimeter and software. the problem with TN panels is that even if the color is not that bad, the viewing angle will be, and you will see contrast shifts at different angles, no way around this.
regarding the comment above, the point of audio reference monitors is to have a neutral perspective, to reproduce every frequency at the same level and introduce no coloration. sure you could mix on crap speakers, but your results would be a random product of the shortcomings of your system. with a neutral reference you may have bad results on some inferior speakers, but you will have a much more consistent experience across ALL speakers, that's the point.
- So, you're getting a monitor with wide gamut capabilities only to dumb them down?raf
- I hear they're difficult to set up even with a colorimeter. I'm not saying TN are an option, I'd get neither of these.raf
- not dumbing down, creating an accurate profile that gives predictable and consistent results on all monitorsacescence

So IPS panels and if I spend less than 400 I am getting some busted ass quality. Okay okay. Fair enough.
