Proud to launch the latest version of my portfolio, created from scratch w/ Thematic (WordPress framework):
- version30
7 is not wholly divisible by 3!
- i know, i wanted on larger column in my blueprint CSS grid ;)nemoDreamer
- baseline_shift0
odd, your header gets cut in half when i click 'contact'
same for the work pages. Unless i hover.
this is a strange effect.
- header only needs to be 100% on first page, on others, it's a waste of space, so i slide it out. if it's too confusing to too many people, i'll remove it :(nemoDreamer
- really bad usability and distracting.Samush
- i'll remove it.nemoDreamer
- version30
how much did you pay for this?
- pay? it's my design :)nemoDreamer
- oh well, feels like a wordpress themeversion3
- based on a wp framework.. he CSSed it from scratch.ifeltdave
- canuck0
I find it a bit confusing to use.
Also not sure you need the lightBox pop up effect on all the work some of it is big enough.
I would remove the comment box, you probably don't need that for each piece of work. it just makes the site longer, and more scrolling is required to get to the bottom.
Not liking the fact that you have to click back and forth to view the work also.
- Also cut down some of your work maybe. It gets a bit overwhelming.
canuck - I think it's a good start though.canuck
- i'll be needing the comments for SEOnemoDreamer
- Maybe reduce the size of it, or cut out a field or two?canuck
- true, i can make comments slide inr only when needed.nemoDreamer
- Also cut down some of your work maybe. It gets a bit overwhelming.
- d_rek0
It certainly looks nice, if not a tad confusing functionality wise like canuck said. Actually, i agree with pretty much everything he said.
- version30
i agree with most of what d_rek said, except the part about canuck
- nemoDreamer0
great feedback!

that 7/3 thing above is janky, the shadows sliding everywhere, janky, just get to the point, what's with all the glitter and lube trying to eye fuck me while i try to focus on something you've done?
having said that all i can remember about your site from 5 minutes ago is that there were a lot of useless shadows everywhere and things slid open just barely for no real reason other to act as hover:
- what does janky mean?canuck
- harsh, but point taken.nemoDreamer
- Nevermind!canuck
- he means if i'm going to do irregular columns, then the difference needs to be more intended/obvious?nemoDreamer
- i mean learn to do mathsversion3
- because the laws of troll-design clearly state all columns must be identical?nemoDreamer

"It certainly looks nice"
Can't say I agree. The background is way overdone (trees and mountains, really?) while also managing to be incredibly monchrome. The typefaces chosen are not very good, and overall it looks too much like a generic blog template. Alignment jumps from centered to right aligned to left aligned for no apparent reason.
- the landscape fits to the dark twist on "little nemo in slumberland" theme of my company.nemoDreamer
- Ah, right - I remember that book, good stuff. But seriously, I think you can implement this better.ukit
- as for alignement, there's only left/justified in a simple column system... maybe overreacting a bit? :)nemoDreamer
- I think the titles and comments should be flush with the left edge...why not?ukit
- oh: it's all left-aligned in its column. the only thing breaking the box is the illustration. maybe i need to make that clearer...nemoDreamer
- Just because you have a grid of sorts doesn't mean you should put content in any random column when it doesn't look goodukit

WordPress doesn't support previous/next if you navigate to a post directly...
If you select one of the top categories, though, you'll se previous/next links appear for that category...
I'm working on a solution to pull in a 2nd query to find out previous/next on direct hits, though.
- i built one that does, wanna see?version3
- http://dev.rabbitwer…version3
- and like they all do yo, i built that from the generic default in a dayversion3
- care to share the trick? (maybe using thematic messed it up...)nemoDreamer
- there was no trick, i only did it right.version3

the thumbnails are not vertically aligned properly. when there's a thumbnail with text that are more than one line, it pushes down on the thumbnail below it.
don't really like the thumbnail rollover effect. makes it confusing when it winds up on top of the other thumbnail.
- think of it like the front-page of a newspaper.nemoDreamer
- seriously, did you just made that up??dijitaq
- lots of websites do it, especially design ones: http://desandro.com/…nemoDreamer
- i meant your reply. sorry, just doesn't seem like that it was your intention to make it like the front page of a newspaperdijitaq
- yes, my intention was to not have a boring rows of aligned thumbnails, but make it more like a mosaic/mix.nemoDreamer

Because I am in the Christmas spirit, your site has been nominated as "The Best Wordpress Template of the Day" on QBN.
- and so i need to brace myself for much more criticism!!! :DnemoDreamer
- version30
nemoDreamer, if you keep having to verbally justify your visual decisions, you've made the wrong ones.
- possibly true. but i can't only cater to people who can only handle boxes. that's why US design is still so far behind...nemoDreamer
- nemoDreamer0
version3, why all the spite? i understand your dislike for shadows, since you've gone for the equally overdone 'retro 2080's vector' effect.
also, building a simple blog from the default template is easy, but there's loads of hooks, filtering and category-specific changes going on here.
that said, i regrat using Thematic and it's wonky hooks, and now wish i'd built if from 0 for more control...
or maybe Hybrid Framework http://themehybrid.com/ or the very powerful http://wpframework.com/ once it finally gets released...

i don't see the 'need' for that header hover effect... and I really get distracted by the type in the logo sitting so close to the edge of the browser...
... the type is nice - the color and feel are nice... but the layout is clunky (that 3/7 thing as mentioned)... and there's no need for the rollovers if you're not going to reveal anything (in my opinion). All you're doing is showing a few more pixels and some type that is rather difficult to read.
Overall style and finishing effects are nice (subtle shadows etc... they're nice and clean)... just got to work on the spacing and clunkiness annnnd header. :)
- now that's non-trollish feedback i can work with! thank you!nemoDreamer
- version30
i wasn't going to post this until i read the following...
"i can't only cater to people who can only handle boxes. that's why US design is still so far behind..."
you are quite ignorant. (so much it makes me want to swear)
your site is covered in boxes, albeit ever so poorlynow unrelated to that but still on topic...
i think you mis-read my "from the template" statement. there is custom js and other custom widgets i've done/added so what you see as far as the code is 100% me, i only used the template for the structure wordpress needs for the calls. where as it sounds like you used some documented thing and fucked it up in the end.
as far as sorting my link that i shared, it has all the wordpress options such as tag filtering post discrimination calendar searching. If you really want me to make it change it's appearance for print web video etc, let me write a quick body class and get that out of the way for you.
so don't get yourself inflated that you've done something unique when you've admitted using the backend of the most prolific blogging software on the planet then giving it what has become a criticized skin.
- PonyBoy0
i seriously think this could come together if you just reduced the mass of clutter...
... you could even keep your big button rollovers - just reveal more image or legible type etc... even keep your stylish foof (the shadows / lighting etc)...
make the header stationary - reduce the size of your logo if you feel it takes up too much space... but enough of that weirdo rollover stuff! Congrats! You found jquery!... now discipline yourself. :)
- :D on the jQuery remark, been using it for years, actually :)nemoDreamer
- agreed on the overuse of roll-over, and reducing logo on subsequent pages.nemoDreamer
- ukit0
Nemo...whats with the attitude...maybe just admit there are some things you don't know? You will never improve if you already think you are the best and try to justify away every criticism.
- sorry... i'm not justifying it away, i simply think some of it is a bit rash and first-impression-ishnemoDreamer
- nemoDreamer0
version3, i never pertained to have invented something new, and i wasn't criticizing you for building on the default template. i build on Thematic, which is even more stripped down than default, and added a couple thousand lines of code to get it where it is now.
in hindsight, working on top of default would have been much easier, since using frameworks is more for people who need simple hooks, and once you need to add something in a custom place, without a hook, you're stuck.
saying my theme looks like a template is harsh and unfair, but i see that i could have been a bit more original in my organization.
i admit my column grid could be cleaner and bolder in it's use of box-spanning content, and i used some superflous effects that detract from functionality more that they add to looks.
luckily, that's what broadcasting on QBN is all about: getting help and feedback. not the regrettable 4chan it's become since newstoday.com was lost...
i appreciate constructive criticism and also know that the more an issue gets pointed out, the better it is to just scrap it.
i'm going back to the drawing board...

IMHO
lose the "Highest Rated", "Most Rated", tag cloud and all the social networking garbage. It's pointless and looks like a mess.
