Interesting fad in a phone. I like the simple design and the novelty of the screen, but can't imagine it being all that useful.

Its just the original First Direct identity and campaign from 1989.
I like how on the minimal page it boasts of being a simple phone, nothing but talk, text, and time, and then when you go past the First Direct graphics to the Sony site, with all its usual cluttered colourful graphics and shit fonts, it lists all the phone's features like internet access, email, concierge service, 4mp camera etc etc.
Vacuous unoriginal marketing shit, hinged on having a see-through screen, which is nothing new anyway.

"concierge*, providing members with 24/7 support for all lifestyle requests, from the everyday to the esoteric"
Who in their right mind thinks this crap is a marketable feature?

This is squarely aimed at the "monocle" market, who blow their load all over that sort of marketing crap.

It's bullshit.
If it's pure and simple, why does it also do music, web etc. It doesn't follow through with the promise.I am someone who just wants an ultra simple phone for talking and texting with a great battery life.
So I have a Nokia 1100, it's perfect can't fault it, and the interface design is untouched, it's the most intuituve.I'm always on the look out for a simpler phone that looks great if anyone knows one. Every phone released now is a pile of crap that will break and does too many things.
Also, fail on Sony trying to do swiss design and typography. Some of the site uses Helvetica but then you get Arial elsewhere and the layout, leading etc is just atrocious. Wallpaper or Sony need to try a lot harder if they're aiming at a design conscious crowd.
this is a mess:

- not really, that's why they paired up with Wallpaper, that demographic is pretty bigBaskerviIle

I actually don't mind the campaign. I mean, Black helvetica has already been done very well by loads of people, but I still think the outdoor stuff is pretty distinctive for a phone company.....

I don't see what Swiss design has to do with a Japanese Mobile phone.
This is a typical case of graphic designers following graphic design trends rather than doing decent research. The people out there would be probably happier with some ugly colourful graphics and loads of gradients, but the designers working on the campaign probably really enjoyed doing a bit of Swiss Style Design.
Hope it helps them sell phones at least.

Sony really are loosing the plot, I brought one of there Digital Cameras a couple of years ago and it's completely crap, it has a stupid wheel to select what the camera settings are on, and whenever you put it in a pocket it just moves the setting to whatever it happens to be on at the time because there is no locking button.
- same problem with a canon and the video/photo/preset slider every time it goes in its own caseBIGGESTDOGINTHEWORLD

a nice simple site for their simple (posh) phone, but if you want to find out more about it, ooh no you can't be enjoying your browsing experience in a clean interface you have to wade through the sony ericsson site if you want any actual information. arseholes.
