Me, my gf and fam are headed to Australia tomorrow for the holiday. Anyone have suggestions for things to do/see from a design/food/shops/chillax perspective? AU suggestions, please! We'll be in Broad Beach for Christmas, Sydney for New Years.

keep out of the city and stay at the north shore beaches. surry hills is where a lot of the design stuff is. but they're all wankers up there anyway so you're stuffed.

broad beach QLD you mean? that'll be nice. good beaches and surf etc there. lots of hot chicks in bikinis yada yada yada.
just don't expect too much from sydney. it's over-rated. you'll just sit in traffic all day at that time of year.

Sydney's not that bad for a few days, and Surry Hills posh? Not quite. Wander round to get the best of it. A good afternoon is if you head up to Watson's Bay on a boat from Circular Quay. And make sure to eat out, get hold of a copy of the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide. But there's no real Oz in Sydney, but there is real bad traffic as forcetwelve says...

Oh look at all the victorians and queenslanders dumping shit on sydney.
Dont mind em, Sydney is the dogs balls. Especially this time of year. You'll love it. Too much to do to pen here. Just visit the beaches, Bondi - Bronte walk. Kirrabilli walk. Head to Blue mountains. Hit a few of the great returants and cafes we have.
You cant go wrong

you'll have to get out of the city to experience the real australia.

actually
sydney is definitely the least "real" australian city, no matter that toe_knee says. sorry bro. sydney is the most "american" city of australia.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions! Just got back after 2 weeks on the island =).
We hit up the Gold Coast and the beaches (Burleigh, Carrumbin), hung out with some of the coolest marsupials on earth, ate lots of fish/chips, drove on the 'wrong' side of the road with only a couple close calls, and saw some amazing sunsets. It was really quiet around town though but that was a nice experience before heading to Sydney.
Sydney was a lot more like home (SF) and a lot more touristy but still great. Did lots of shopping in Surry Hill and Padington, drank lots of beer at the pub and the NYE fireworks from the North was amazing. I was also surprised that once you get out of the CBD, chains disappeared for the most part. My GF and I were truly disappointed that some of the shops were shut for an extended holiday though. It was great to see the work of so many creative folks at the shops in Oz. Thank you!
