Private beta ends January 15, 2010
• Kargo platform to remain by-invite-only
• Basic service to be free of charge
• Fees for select features will apply
• 50% discount for all current members
• Members to receive pre-approved invitesDear kargo Beta testers!
With every online project we have embarked on in the past, the best time has always been the beta test period. Likewise, to develop kargo for more than a year with those of you who joined us far ahead of everyone else and helped us shape the platform's future has been a privilege in the best tradition of the internet.
While growing up with the web ever since it was still largely uncharted territory, almost every project we initiated was made available to the public for free. Whenever people asked us about our business plan we happily announced that we'd figure out the details when the time would arrive and this mentality has served us well.
As it happens, many of the content oriented sites we have created — from spacecollective.org to butdoesitfloat.com and the upcoming instantcinema.org — will always be available for free. But in the case of kargo the only way we can sustain our ongoing efforts to create the best system to present your content, is to initiate the subscription model we first announced in February 2009.
In appreciation of your invaluable feedback while we were building kargo we offer all current members a one-time 50% discount for a 1 Year subscription. You will also receive 2 pre-approved membership invites.
As we further develop kargo, new features and upgrades will be added to the platform, i.e. new kargo Designs, Community Contributed Designs, additional Video capabilities, expanded Slideshow features, and many others. First on the list will be additional community building functionalities such as custom networks and contextual discussion tools.
Some of the above mentioned future upgrades will be added to the menu as differently priced options.

Folkert, Josh, Rene, Jon-Kyle, RichardAnyone going to pony up cash for this or move on to one of the many other free CMS systems?
- inkpink0
aha... i too was trying to post. getting tricky with the "K" there.
- arthur0
Funny, I tried to respond with a positive post, but my request was denied "due to the nature of its content."
- e-wo0
Won't pay. Great system, though.
- SigDesign0
yeah i was thinking of using their system, but now that's is going to be paid, I'll just roll my own
- inkpink0
yup. ain't cheap. fees + $33 just to use your own url is kinda over the top.
- arthur0
I'll pay and see how it goes. Looking forward to new features and options.
- lumedia0
That sucks. I just got mine setup.

fyi http://berta.hungry.lv looks good to me
- Amicus0
So, you guys save time and hassle using a system that somebody else has sweated over and you won't pay some miniscule fees? Remember this is advertising your business or skills to prospective clients or employers.
Don't be so stingy! :)
- agreedanthonyzinonos
- Yeah, I've had nothing but good things with it, won't mind giving them some $ for the effort.Bargels
- $33/yr for a url isn't minisculee-wo
- $33 bucks is a dinner out...
I'm not too highly paid, but even I will support this by buying into it... Amen Amicusidentity

WTF is Kargo
- eieio0
what is this instantcinema.org thing?
- ethanfink0
Haha nice work around... I was going to post the same, but the content was denied!
- ethanfink0
As long as the services, designs, etc are there, I will pay... Otherwise its kinda expensive.
I don't mind supporting the developers, but if it goes over $8 bucks a month, that crazy! I get flickr for $20 bucks a year!
- raf0
It's not that expensive, if you look at pricing of other services that are used for professional work...

It gets me mad that you guys are always up in arms about how designers are undervalued, and yet cry about paying some minimal monthly fees for a service that saves you a lot of time – time which you could spend making a decent hourly rate.
- raf0
They should, however, offer a PRO badge. No, seriously — people will pay for that.
- utopian0
good luck with that!
- raskalnikov810
The good side of it being paid is they will have to listen to their customer's complaints and suggestions. This is why I use shopify instead of the many open source options out there.

*cough* core *cough*
- Yeah Core is still free.
