Is anyone following the thread on Brand New about space150s design contest?:
http://www.underconsideration.co…There's a follow-up thread, too:
http://www.underconsideration.co…This is one of the latest posts:
"Contests, open design jams, and even spec work are, and will continue to be, a growing facet of the design landscape and much important and influential work will be created using these vehicles."I was surprised at the number of people who posted their support for spec work. I'm curious how people think they can support themselves by working this way.

probably a result of dudes being out of work and thinking that working for free with a chance of payment is better than no work at all, i'm guessing?

I dunno. I don't get the logic. The threads are a pretty long read but it feels like 60-75% of the people think spec work is okay.
- it just depends on whos telling em to spec. If UC says dont, they wont. They prob didnt even see it as spec coming from Armin.baseline_shift
- as spec coming from Armin.baseline_shift
- If 60-75% thought it was OK why did he cancel itukit
- I said "feels", do you want me to do a statistical analysis?Josev

No, in this case I think it's fine. It will only live for 150 days anyway.
- I see now that Armin went on and reversed himself. Either way, I suppose.duckofrubber

The last year feels like I've gone from one pitch, to another spec job, to another freebie, to another reduced job for a friend. And I've had it up to here.

What a bunch of vaginas bleeding over there. I stopped reading UC pretty recently. The level of cockdom over there is too annoying to bear.

The thing is, that if this is a true sampling of feelings in the design community, then I think this probably will become more common. I'm not against competition but I want to know how these people expect to support themselves? A number of people said that they thought this would make our work better. This assumes that the people behind the contests will make good choices. We all know how good clients are at that.

I think it's the sort of thing that would have been taken as a normal competition before the advent of spec work.
Having said that, the feedback was obviously mostly negative, hence the bitter and defensive retraction.
