does itunes manage your library (auto adds music to itunes folder) or do you do it manually and leave mp3s in your preferred location?

When my computer fucked up in March of this year, my CDs just sat there on the shelf.

If your mp3's are outside the iTunes Music folder it probably can't find them because your hard drive name/ID changed. You could try quiting iTunes, renaming the drive as it was and relaunching. Fingers crossed. Has worked for me.
Or you may just have to clear the library and dump it all back in. Sucks but if you already manage manually shouldn't be that big of a deal. Only problem is that you'll lose playlists, ratings etc.
Or start fresh and do as Apple says; move your music into the iTunes Music/ Auto Add... folder.
