Agreed. It can become stale and complacent. But why are people always so concerned about the status of hip-hop? I never hear my Dad complaining about the state of country music.

I found the read mildly entertaining until the mention of J-Kwon' Tipsy track. After that, I couldn't read it anymore.
The interesting angle that is not really explored is that hip hop was greatest when it was treated less like a commodity created for mass consumption.
The syndrome appears to be that MC creates his first album when he is still hungry and very close to the streets. Then as time goes on and success comes, that same rapper starts talking about the trappings of success and chicks and what have you. And then that crap subsequently waters down the airwaves with that damn club music.
To me, the only artists that have stayed true to themselves are DBlock (the LOX), Beenie Siegal & Camron. Everyone else I like are less well known some might say but still have stayed true to themselves... Dead Prez, Lil Brother, M.O.P., Lupe Fiasco, Hi-Tek, The Foreign Exchange.
There is a need for more indivuality in the music but as long as you have to go to someone to get a "deal" and they can say yes or no based on whether they think you'd be a success or not, then the music will suffer. Can you imagine, if LL Cool J or Snoop Dogg etc was not given a chance to make music? Those guys have 20 year careers right now. Its a testament to hip hop in my opinion. I'd like to see it continue.

I wrote about this same thing on someones facebook wall a few months ago. Back in the days the innovative stuff would find its way to radio somehow. Acts like Pharcyde and WuTang were on the radio. I dont know if that means radio has gotten worse or what but it just is what it is. And this is in all genres, the rock station in Miami has never played one Black Keys or Strokes (!) song, either.
