Just been emailed a Flash skyscraper advert for our website. It weighs in at 8.6mb. That is crazy, right? When I tell them they are MENTAL, what would be sensible size to ask them to redo it at?
Also, it's the wrong orientation, but that's another story. 120 x 600... it's called skyscraper for a reason. Jeez.

30k to 50k

40k and under. if it's rich media then it can be larger.

8.6mb! What is going on in that file. I want to know.
- Not a lot to be honest. Got a vid loop and some sweepy text.Raniator

tell them to optimize that video!
or just try and see if you can bring it down yourself in the properties.

for files like that... shouldn't the video be hosted on a 3rd party (fast) server and only the base swf that calls it is actually loaded on your page?
I've been requested to do large video flash banners... that were easily as large as what you're saying (movie trailers - tv ads etc) but I always leave the vid separate of the swf and call it off another server...

If it's being hosted as a rich media banner they may allow you to have a 40k loader SWF, which subsequently loads your flv. Not sure you how long your video is, but you should be able to get it lower than 8mb by importing as an flv.
You should ask for a spec-sheet, which specifies these details.

Under 40k for the initial container and load the video as a seperate asset - get a spec sheet to clarify this

there should be specs. 8.6 megs thats insane.

8mb, hahahaha. fucking hell. what size is the fla?!? sheer genius. who would have thought that a 6 month design course wouldn't educate people well enough...

maybe you're looking at the '.fla' file? try to publish it...

Why don't you post a zip of what you received. This silliness is interesting.

there's talk in many camps about actually phasing skyscrapers out as they're not as effective as other ad units. namely the big box and leaderboard. the problem in many ways is the height of the sky and how it has to be positioned perfectly on screen with a 1024 res or else it's head or feet are cut off.... zzzzzzzzzzz.....

Looking forward to 10 years down the line. When we're all laughing at the file-size constrains we used to have back 2009, while zipping sparkling moon-juice and downloading personalities to our domesticated realdoll bots.

- 10 years ago the standard was about 30k, now it's 40... In 2019 it might be 60... Soz :DSlashPeckham

man thats absolutely ridiculous
whenever i have to do OLA's its normally MPU's, skyscrapers and leaderboards and they pretty much all have to be 30k. in fact 35k is a goddamn luxury!
a skyscraper at 8mb??? they have no idea what theyre doing!
