Font/Grid Question :(

Hallo all
Was wondering if anyone can point out the really obvious thing I'm missing, or else call me a noob and tell me to fuck off.
Left is 28pt on 28pt, right is 11pt on 14pt
As you can see, the ascenders line up with the top of the cells perfectly, but the baselines don't match. This is on a 7pt baseline grid (gutter & cell margins are 14pt).
Is this specific to this font? Or have I done my maths wrong? (I never was very good with numbers...)
C&C welcomed...

you are aligning based on cap-height rather than baseline. cap-height will vary from font to font. try aligning baselines and your math should be good.
- yes. Almost all type parameters are measured from the baseline.baseline_shift

I think I don't "get" something here, I can't help thinking the maths should be sound either way given that it's all the same font?
I'll try using the baseline instead, though when I do, the ascenders don't match up. I guess it's best to ignore the Ascenders/Descenders and just focus on Cap Height?

The math is sound, but you should just be worried about keeping things on the baseline and not lining up cap-heights, ascenders, descenders and the like. Like johndiggity said, they will all vary from font to font. You will begin to notice a much better level of consistency with your typesetting if you choose to line to the baseline as opposed to anything else.

the pt size of a font is kind of relative. 12 helvetica is much different than say 12 pt newzald. however 12 pt leading is always the same no matter what the font.

Baseline it is! Thanks for the pointers gents, most appreciated.

I always though the principle was to 'hang' type from gridlines lining up the top of a bounding box (the same size as its point size), as when setting metal type in a galley which is set from the top of the page?
So rather than cap heights aligning if you turn on the bounding box (in say Illustrator) the top of the bounding boxes and the baselines line up.
Lining up cap heights doesn't allow for characters taller than cap height like ! and " which are accomodated in the space above cap height within the bounding box as they would with a piece of metal type?
