    I always though the principle was to 'hang' type from gridlines lining up the top of a bounding box (the same size as its point size), as when setting metal type in a galley which is set from the top of the page?

    So rather than cap heights aligning if you turn on the bounding box (in say Illustrator) the top of the bounding boxes and the baselines line up.

    Lining up cap heights doesn't allow for characters taller than cap height like ! and " which are accomodated in the space above cap height within the bounding box as they would with a piece of metal type?
