This is interesting:
"In 1979, Time Magazine reported that tests were being conducted in over 50 department stores using subliminal messages to control shop-lifting using messages such as "I am an honest person" and "stealing is dishonest". One un-named store reported a SAVINGS OF $600,000 BY REDUCING THEFT 37 PERCENT during a nine month period.

Nervous system manipulation by electromagnetic fields from monitorsPhysiological effects have been observed in a human subject in response to stimulation of the skin with weak electromagnetic fields that are pulsed with certain frequencies near 1/2 Hz or 2.4 Hz, such as to excite a sensory resonance. Many computer monitors and TV tubes, when displaying pulsed images, emit pulsed electromagnetic fields of sufficient amplitudes to cause such excitation. It is therefore possible to manipulate the nervous system of a subject by pulsing images displayed on a nearby computer monitor or TV set. For the latter, the image pulsing may be imbedded in the program material, or it may be overlaid by modulating a video stream, either as an RF signal or as a video signal."

I have to pick up these books. Obviously these images used in mass marketing have made quite a few dollars.... But when it's not a hidden agenda for political gain or some other message, is it really only sex that is most persuasive? I know fear is also used frequently and effectively.

The gestalt psychology plays a huge part in looking at an image, more than the subliminal bits you can add to it.
I read this book while at school (the italian version) and was extremely complete on the various aspect of the gestalt psychology:
