Asking clients for more time

Hey guys. Need some veteran advice. I'm working on a project and due to some illnesses within the clients team I received the required files extremely late. I told them that I will need more time but they are refusing to change the deadline. They understand that the printer needs a set amount of time but keep shrinking mine back. How do I be more firm and tell them they need to shift the deadline without sounding like a whiny baby and alienating them?

isnt it in the contract when the final deliverables will get to you ? : |

do you have a clause in your contract about the client honoring deadlines as well?

more time or more money cuz of the extra time you will have to put in? or sub-hire?

keep the deadline. ask for more money.

It's far easier to push timeframes out if you plan that into your contract, yes. However, if you have a good arrangement with the client try to accommodate them on this round of work while sending over an addendum to your contract covering just this point. Give a solid business reason for it but make sure to point out that is was your fault for not having that language in the original.
We handle this all the time here when a sales person fucks us on the sow.

Thanks guys. I screwed myself because I only focused on what I would deliver for what price and not time line required. I've charged more in the past when a job didn't go as promised and it didn't go over well. They paid me but the relationship was strained a bit. Trying to avoid that situation this time. Right now I just don't know if it's possible for me to complete the thing and I don't want to promise them I can deliver and not deliver. And since it's not my fault I know I have some room there to speak up. They just aren't hearing me. What I'm gathering form you guys is that I should have included that shit in my contract though.
