A friend is setting up a site for his band.
Any good recommendations for all-in domain name buying and hosting?

I wouldn't do that

Yes, I've seen too many people complaining of problems getting control of the name later, especially important with a band if they get successful?
I host a stack of names with GoDaddy and point them wherever I need... lots of direct control, reasonably cheap, etc..

FUCK!!!
- relax. breathe. breathe...ribit
- you can always transfer domains to another registrar, just do it before you have problems.acescence
- yeah, aces, that's what I was thinking...Corvo2
- Will ask them politely. Just registered 1 month ago give or take.Corvo2
- yes if the contract allows for that in a reasonable time. I've bought domains through various registrars then later moved to GoDaddyribit
- ... moved to GoDaddyribit
- actually all this stuff is regulated quite strictly. You just need to read the contract.ribit
- if you can find it :Pribit
- lol.Corvo2
- didn't print anything, but i have a bunch of their e-mails. bound to be in there somewhere.Corvo2

I've been using mydomain.com for a couple of years. I've never had to test their customer service. Maybe that's a good thing.

I try to pick services that give you lots of self-admin tools and work so well that you never have to contact customer service. GoDaddy mostly good at that...

I just found out I'm getting a refund from SnapNames on a domain name I bought at auction 2 years ago (they found one of their staff had been bidding against customers). They seem to be handling it well though, very up front..

Yea, id recommend getting domains over at GoDaddy, and get hosting somewhere else. You can choose MT (it can get pricey tho) or dreamhost or site5. :)

I use domainordering.com to register and manage my domains for $11- a year per domain name, and use their service to redirect and point the DNS to my web host which is fatcow.com
I use fatcow.com I paid $88- for (2) year, easy set-up, fast servers and the best customer service that I ever had!

I don't host where I keep my domains, but I don't get what's wrong with keeping them both at one place?
Godaddy are pushing their rubbish services onto you all the time in very unpleasant ways, you have to learn how to get around their panel.
I once bought a domain with them at a godaddy auction, that took me to pay for a bogus auctions membership. When they autocharged me for this membership a year later, I took my domains from them.
Also, Godaddy charges extra for whois info masking, a lot of hosts do it for free now.- if you have a dispute with your host, you can just move your domain elsewhere.acescence

years ago i heard that http://www.gandi.net/ are great for domains, because they ensure you retain domain rights.. not sure how true it is today though.
