^ yup ... i'd say "newer entries" (left) and "older entries" (right) is the least confusing.
setting the links on the left and right helps a lot in itself. what gets me confused is when there is something like "previous entries" and "next entries" (which i think are not so good labels anyway) on top of one another.

Whatever - please ensure that pre/next buttons are consistenty in the same place. Having such a button move when it is joined or loses its opposite annoys me and makes me think the te author was being lazy.

On a blog where information is displayed chronologically, next > should be the older content.
on search results pages where most relevant content next is the next page.
in context they have thier own uses.
next, older, more, etc...- next placed on the right, like reading a book you turn the page.Stugoo
