It seems like my laptop is too dinky to do any real work these days. I mean, I can't really handle any Adobe application on it. For that, I have to use my desktop with its big screen.
Also, my iPhone is just the thing for emailing and Facebook and Twitter.
So, I'm wondering what I have a laptop for anymore?

obviously to complain online that you can not afford to buy a machine that can complete the aforementioned task?

on the other side though, i get sick of always sitting at a laptop, i mean it's just plugged in to full charge then i unplug it and kill it without ever moving it. kinda makes me wonder why i don't have a power house desktop, then i have to go somewhere and work on site, then i love and remember why i have the laptop.

I just got a desktop for the same reason... I'd been surviving on a netbook for a few months with an external monitor - and while it was okay for most things, the difference is pretty amazing ... kind of got used to slow speed and made do with it. A large screen and fast computer is a pretty great thing.
I still think a netbook is a good compromise tho

- yeah, if it's got a mini screen good battery and good graphics / proc. power it's better********

It's for watching porn and taking a shit at the same time. Nothing else.

to have an entertainment gizmo when you travel.
And you can work on laptops if it has enough power for what you do.
My thought is laptops should be small and portable, they shouldn't be some big movie watching machine. That would kind of defeat the purpose.

I had a G4 tower, the one with the four bullet holes in the front. I upgraded to a macbook pro with an ssd hd and boy is the difference good. The screen is better quality and I hook it up to my 24" lcd. I can take it out with me on the road and it's far easier on the eyes for doing emails and stuff on an iphone. I use the iphone for calls, sms, music and the odd game or too. I guess it really boils down to your lifestyle and personal choice and operational requirements. Laptops are the way forward in my book.

I'll never buy a desktop computer again. My laptop serves as one, lid closed, with external LCD, keyboard and tablet plugged in.

Hackintosh desktop + PC laptop = heaven + funds leftover to travel and buy hedonistic things.....
Seriously, I use my cheap PC laptop to test stuff, move files, and meet clients... that's all.... in My case, a desktop of any recent vintage with a quad-core and nice video card + 2 monitors is soooo much nicer to edit photos and code on....

you gotta run PS7/cs and illustrator 10/cs
near identical programmes, 1/10 the system requirementsEven better use illustrator 7 and PS5.5. Those apps will fly on a netbook. and we all got by with them no problem a few years ago.
- have fun opening a client file... "hey can you save that down for me?"version3
- yeah, I used to use ps with 512 ram .. my netbook has 2gb********
- to be fair, do clients ever have anything other than a low-res jpg or a word/ppt document?monNom
- doing contract for agencies yes, in the latest version of all apps tooversion3

One reason I use a cheap PC laptop is so that, whenever I'm with a client at a meeting, I can easily say this machine is just for notes and demos and testing, I do real work on my mac desktop, and that way they can't talk me into making "minor changes" in the middle of a meeting... separate meetings from actual work is a good idea...
