I've always preferred Officials since they changed the shape of the Stan Smith at the end of the nineties. The toe is too long these days and the leather a little cheap. The leather used for Officials is much sturdier so the shape remains more 'popped' but I guess SS's are more comfortable.

I also despise the way Adidas changed the shape of the gazelle to a lamer 'long toe' style just so that they could offer the original shape at a higher cost by using better suede and calling them 'vintage'.
Too bad I'm a total sucker and love gazelle's. Sold.

It seems to me that Stans cost almost exactly the same now as they did when first came out 35 years ago. So they're either making them with slaves, or using cheaper materials, or both.

Shell toes are great but not these daft new ones like v3 has posted. The original old school versions with the slightly off white shell and having the flat tongues is essential. Naturally the connouisseur would require the label to read 'Made in w. Germany'. With coordinated fat laces needless to say.

old shell toes were awesome and lasted forever.
old stan smiths looked great until they were worn in and then they turned to shit (the white surface cracked and looked like my grandmothers calluses)
old gazelles sucked for skating, but looked good when new.
don't know what the new ones are like.
