In all honesty, I try to attend AIGA/NY events as much as I can, and it's happening. Surely, there must be more of you here on QBN that are members.

I was a member out in LA a few years ago when the company I worked for paid for the membership. I too saw the biggest drawback being the cost. I never went to any of the events though, didn't even notice if there were any really. I did do a mentor/portfolio critique day once with a bunch of other volunteers which was fun. This year I'm on the board of the NY chapter. Subsequently, they make you join again for that. :) We try to put on a pretty big variety of events (topics, venues, speakers, themes, ticket prices), at least a couple per month to choose from to make it worth everyone's hard earned money. NY has the advantage of being able to choose top names who work in the city to present, but I think any chapter can do some cool things to get people involved and informed.
There is definitely room for growth and improvement within the organization, but it's a big beast of a ship to stir while trying to make everyone happy. I'd love to hear anyone's thoughts on it and what they would like to see happen. I can definitely see the side of the coin that thinks it is a "joke", but what would make it seem like less of a joke then?

Are there any real benefits to joining AIGA, curious?
- for me, ive gotten quite a bit of freelance - the stipulation - i would say - is that it TOTALLY depends on your chapter if...identity
- it is worth doing. Different chapters provide more opportunity than others - some are VERY political :-(identity
- but some are bastions of creative thought with really motivated people ready to mobilize and do cool shit!identity

I was while I was in college. Our local chapter offers quarterly memberships but it just isn't worth it. The local events mostly consist of washed-up douchebag trendwhore Art Directors and Ad People who have been getting axed the last few years due to the Big 3's steady decline. It's usually just a bunch of tossbags getting together for drinks and trying to act cool.
It's not all bad though, they bring some good artists/designers in for lectures and workshops but mostly it's just a clique for hipsters in the area.
