I've recently realized how inspired I am by certain artistists/directors, but mostly because of how they think and what they say, rather than their work itself.
Some examples for me are David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick. It's not like I don't like their work, I love several films from both of them, but I find myself only liking about 1/4 of their work.

I feel the same way about Carson's work.
and I'm not saying his work is crap by any means, the guy is where it is because he is incredibly talented, but I'm not necessarily in love with most of the work I have seen from him.On the other hand, every time I hear him speak at conferences and stuff like that, I think he does an amazing job and he is usually the highlight of the evening.
- and then you have the guys that do AMAZING work, but are not good speakersMeeklo
- I completely agree about Carson. His work has never done much for me, but he's always got something interesting to say.shapeaspect

richardclark - i'd argue that you might be experiencing an even deeper communication with those artists. That you have negative reactions to some of their work, is still a reaction, and one with meaning and purpose. You connect with Lynch and Kubrick on several levels, which make it ok to not be into all that they produce.
Been a lifelong Lynch fan myself, but there are things he's done that I really don't care for.

Stefan Sagmeister. I went to one of his talks and left with insane respect for him, despite his work just not clicking with me. Since then I've been trying to make the work grow on me just because his talk was so inspiring.
- agreed. Its his confidence. Thats prob how we sells clients on such extravagant shit.baseline_shift

When I named this thread, I said "crap" because it's concise--not that I think their work is actually crap, just don't like to experience it.
