If having an accountant is meant to reduce the amount time spent staring at paperwork, then why does everyone I know who uses an accountant spend 3 hours every month with said account staring at paperwork?

And get used to Net30, most checks coming in no sooner than 30 days, so you'll need cash flow... try to avoid the credit card.

Maybe my clients are oddballs, but I usually get paid in 3 weeks or less. This on over 20 invoices going back to March.

We usually get paid in 3 months or less, but not always. Usually when they need us to do something new

im a freelance developer. i get most of my work through a local web agency. i dont make much money but its nice being able to wake up and read or play music before getting to work instead of jumping into rush hour traffic. and being able to work from anywhere is awesome when an opportunity to go out of town pops up.
ive done the 9-5 thing too. i can honestly go either way. ill probably go back to a 9-5 again soon, but im not in a huge rush.

You know how you sometimes get a job where you hate your asshole boss and dread coming in to work and dealing with him.
Sometimes when you freelance you have like 5 or 6 of those people fighting for your attention & time and no amount of money makes it worth it.
What sucks even more is that if you are unlucky or just starting out, those assholes are the ones paying your bills and you don't have time to find new clients because you're too busy working for them.
- just giving a worse case scenario - in case any of my clients read this ;)********

also, many clients only need you for one or two projects. which means you will be out of work / hunting for more pretty soon again.
the stress level is pretty high. long hours, also. and if you haven't start loosing some hair, you will.

Striking out on your own means longer days, more stress, less time of the workday as a designer (relatively speaking), and yet somehow still creates a higher quality of life. Strange but true.

this may convince you to go freelance.

Been freelancing the last 3 years... Brought a house with my lady,
been on loads of holidays (Japan, LA, NYC and around europe) we also have a 2 and half old little girl and been paying of our little place in Spain... There has been a few moments where i haven't worked but all in all it's going pretty well...I've worked at too many places and had to work with unhappy staff, overworked and unpaid (sometimes), so their work suffers and why? just so they can live one month to the next... Sorry that ain't living!
I reckon sometimes you just have to take the chance...
