i got a call from a drinks mix company wanting to use one of my photos that i had shot for a book project, and that they had seen. they were going to use it on 100 sell sheets to be distributed to potential buyers of their product, with the stipulation that if they wanted to expand usage beyond that they'd contact me first. i quoted them $150, being that it was a small operation and 100 sell sheets isn't much. this is the picture:
(The picture was mostly self-funded, model doing her own makeup/hair/wardrobe, and using a friend's farm equipment, etc, but the model was still paid for the shoot)I found out shortly afterwards that $150 was too high and they declined to buy the picture.
What should I have charged?

you should be charging a lot more

$150 was too much? than they can go and try and take the photo themselves.
- yeah, if they can't afford 150 you don't want to be dealing with them anyways.lambsy

"drinks mix company"
alcohol is big business. $150 is chump change.

that's peanuts.

Im in agreement. if $150 was too much, it's not much of a hookup.

I'd want to know what they think is a fair price. $25?

The only thing you did wrong was not charge enough.

you should have been charging a lot more. they just don't know what to pay for a photo.

I think you forgot to add a couple zeros to that quote, and they thought they contacted a 15 year old.

do you even have permission from the models?

version3: yeah, the release is all-inclusive.
everyone else: shit, yeah, i kind of had this gut feeling that i was undercharging, but i wanted to be nice.in a fit of bad business judgement, i agreed to license the image for free in exchange for them plugging my book as well as me. now i have a tremendous amount of remorse!

next time ask first, then answer. very similar to think, then speak
