Freelance for Nike/Converse/Adidas?

Has anyone done any freelance work for companies like Nike/Converse/Adidas? Did you have to go through a staffing agency? Do they let you work off-site? How did you get the job?

Creative recruiters. But your best bet is to get in talks with art buyers and creative leads at agencies. 99% of Nike work is handled by several major agencies, and the accounts are split up fairly evenly across them. Hook up with those companies, let them know you're available, and you might find yourself freelancing for them specifically.

I personally think its more related with who you know, than the actual quality of work, and I don't mean to offend to those that worked for them, but in reality we are all replaceable accessories to them.
While I have never worked with Nike/ Converse or Adidas directly, I have done work for DC / Vans and other less known (but still known) companies, and it was always because I talked to the right person at the right time.
Truth is, all these companies will stay big with or without your design work, and they know it.

They normally have onsite designers.
The post jobs through the art institute and other search sites. Their oregon office was hiring for about 6 designers about 2 months ago.

this has nothing to do with nike - but doesn't deserve its own thread, so i'll post it here. in fact - probably doesn't even deserve to be posted:
my first real job after college was for mcd's - i emailed them, asked them for work as a designer and they promptly replied with "we need 42,000 posters made up to go to each of our stores in georgia." i was pretty nervous about the project and was sure that i was gonna misspell big mac... but i was reminded that nobody in georgia would notice.
