I personally think its more related with who you know, than the actual quality of work, and I don't mean to offend to those that worked for them, but in reality we are all replaceable accessories to them.
While I have never worked with Nike/ Converse or Adidas directly, I have done work for DC / Vans and other less known (but still known) companies, and it was always because I talked to the right person at the right time.
Truth is, all these companies will stay big with or without your design work, and they know it.
