I am showcasing a few photoshoots I did art direction for and I want to highlight the whole process. Thinking of showing the inspiration imagery that we used to sell the concept but I don't own it obviously...this will be on my portfolio website which I am only sharing with potential employers. Would I be crossing the line showing other peoples images? I have them labelled "inspiration imagery" and its a bunch of small pics together to convey a general look and feel.
thnx...

My opinion would be to not do it. But it's up to you.

- I lean towards this method :) just want to be respectful of fellow creatives...duhsign

while we're at it, what about the actual images from the photo shoot. I just assume I probably am not legally entitled to show those either although I doubt anyone would object...anyone have experience with that showing imgs from shoots they directed? any problems with the clients or photogs coming back to you afterward?

I would think if you mentioned the photographer and then said you art directed, most people would understand that you didn't shoot it. Also, is it just a photo, or was it part of a layout? I don't say who shot stuff if it is in a catalog I designed or an ad.

both the imagery itself and the final design. I want to show a broader selection of the imagery because the final img selects are few and the shoot was extensive.

I would just say you are directed the photographer and that should be fine.

talk to the photographer(s).... ask them....
Also note that many potential clients think differently than you do, so they may not get your process or inspiration at all, they may be sidetracked into thinking literally, about how you missed the target of what they interpreted your inspiration to be....

good point vaxo. I wouldn't want anyone to think I was claiming the inspiration imagery as my own too.
right now I open with a spread of hero shots from a scene from the shoot, then directly after show a page with small snippets of the inspiration imagery in a montage...I think if I keep the inspiration page quick, with small imagery examples and clearly label and explain what it is it may work...still working through it.

I think talking about inspiration images and such works once you've had a good talk with somebody, and once you can tell they will get your thought process, then you show them stuff, not before....
- at the end or middle of a one on one meeting is a good idea... maybe not a leave-behindvaxorcist

thanks vax, I get ur point. so save the inspiration stuff for a process book and only show that when you have a good connection with someone say at the end of an interview, leave behind or follow up?

i would only show the final images.
