I am trying to figure out the best way to post images (literally over 1000 files) for a client. So that they can access and distribute them to their customers. Or let their customer log-in and access them on their own. I am afraid I am walking into a nightmare what with the amount of files, so I am trying to come up with the easiest solution? Any input would be great! The simpler the better!

search "digital asset management software" and see what's out there. beyond that you need to be more specific about how everything needs to be organized, searched, and distributed.

yeah I think I need to wrap my head around this a bit more...there will need to be thumbnails, individual file downloads, file sets to download, hi res EPS, hi res JPEGs, and low res JPEGS...Thanks anyways!!!!

There's a bunch of different solutions. There's some hosted services that you can subscribe to, or if you want software installed on your own servers that's also an option.
I used something called WebNative years ago that was a total dog at the time, but maybe it's better now (if it's even still around) which does basically what you're looking for. Here's the link to webnative if that helps: http://www.xinet.com/index.php
