Are we, as a society, ok with the escalating amounts of sexuality in our magazines ads? If so why or why not?

i hadn't noticed a change in magazine ads
unless you count american apparel ones, which i'm fine with

why this ethic/philosophy related question
depends on the target audience of the magazine

Please supply examples.

i like it. it saves a lot of time to be able to rub one out while looking through a toyworld catalogue.

- not saying i'm for it. It's a cheap way of selling and bad for kids.CGN

how is sex in the media bad for kids?
why should children grow up ignorant about the one topic most important to human life?
- I'm sure there is other things they could be focusing on besides sex. Art, literature...other human developments.CGN
- probably because it's not the a good way to learn it, and it's not realityelektro
- some believe its disrespectful of womenSugary
- then hide all advertising from them. like you said, there are other better things for them to focus onscarabin
- advertising is worse for them than seeing sex in the mediascarabin
- it's hard to "hide" it from them. Unless they are home schooled or on a farmCGN
- Let kids be kids...they're not interested in this shitBusterBoy

I prefer sex in advertising as opposed to other sales approaches.

Sex in ads are easy. Conceptualizing and executing an amazing art campaign takes more skillz. Just my opinion.

Its bad for kids because the ways it's used is usually brash and misrepresents sex and intimacy in a distasteful way. When used humorously it can be tasteful, without the ironic angle though it's kinda pointless and of no value.

so it looks like the consensus is that sex being misrepresented by the media may be harmful to minors' idea of what sex is.
this can be prevented with adequate parenting and education.
case closed, next topic.

yes, those ads are suggestive. but what bad things are they teaching our children?
that bread shaped like a cock is funny?
that sex in a bathroom can be fun?
O NOES!

Sex is the best form of defense against parasites and pathogens.
Scientists have tried to understand why humans and other animals should reproduce via sex, instead of simply cloning ourselves. And what it all really comes down to is the biological defense system.
So healthy, fit and young people always look sexy - because they show that they are healthy and fit and free from signs of pathogens, parasites and diseases.
We desire that. So we seek it. So advertisers use that natural urge, to sway us towards their products.
My new chat up line is "Would you like to engage in the best form of defense against parasites and pathogens."

the point is that kids are desensitised and most parents have never had the kind of training they should have had to counter this threat.
Look around you and see whether society has become more sexual in concert with more sexualised advertising... of course it has.
More and more teenagers are having sex and experimenting with wilder behaviour at a much earlier age than 50 years ago, when we would have considered most advertising 'naive'.
So we should ask ourselves who really is niave – those who blatantly sell product with no thought to the consequences of sexualised advertising, or those who called pre sexual liberation ideals niave?
