Hello Qbners

I imagine that this is a good thread to cover your query..

^yes, agree. though sometimes too much choice is not that good.
As it for my taste only, I won't "resell" them to clients, which I won't have until months. So I was thinking about a very short list, with font I could potentially use often at the beginning.
No sure if I'm clear...

You have Akkurat, fuck Helvetica and AG, buy Dolly (or Ginkgo) download Charter (Norway gives it away) and you're set.

To me this is a very backwards way of working. Surely you create the design and pick a font that suits your design. Not, buy all the "trendy" fonts and wrap your design around them?
I may be wrong though
When I first started out I "invested" in the Bitstream Library and then refined my selection when I had the budget.

I see your point.
I usually make my own "font", I design 4 or 5 letters to make a logo. My main concern is that I'd like to extend my type style, but for exemple making you own script -and malking it good looking- takes way too much time just for a proposal. I was thinking about starting from nice existing font and reshape them.
But then my type knowledge is quite limited.
See that as me buying pen, cause I haven't got any :)

look at type-together.com
bree is a nice display font, with text alternates (makes a huge difference, it's like buying 2 in 1 really)
adelle is a fresh slab
athelas is a nice text serif face
karmina is a nice friendly text sans

*was working on some labels*
this is still in progress. I've spent a lot of time redrawing the type (LHF sarah script) with strokes, then spent again some times in 3DS just to make sure the line would not cut each other. I've only made a few minor change on the type this time. If I had to do a nice script from scratch, I would have charged my client for 2month of work :)
@Dancer - I thought an exemple would be better than my poor english skills...
So,Even if I'd love to work on project such as neue75, or gramme, truth is that my skills and clients are very far from that.
In some way, I have to keep close to what's trendy since my clients don't necessary ask me to be clever, but producing things their audience will think is cool (sport industry audience = teenagers watching mtv 24/7 :) ).
Lately my clients come from different horizons, but they still ask for what they see in my portfolio.

Or, you could go the Massimo Vignelli route and only use Helvetica (Neue) and Didot (if I'm not mistaken)

I like Flama and Egyptienne URW. I use both regularly and think they are quite good and easy on the eye.
I would also recommend Akzidenz, Apex and Stag.
- I would also recommend whatever JimboJones recommends, he knows his biscuits.shitehawke
