I am doing my sisters wedding invites. Initially Letterpress was our first choice, but because of budget and the stupid economy, we can't go there. Do any of you know of some good quality printers in the LA area? Nothing too "pocket emptying" somewhere in the middle? heeelllppp
cheers.

You should look into a small offset shop, or go with thermography. If you call a place called Sunset Press in San Diego they offer offset at wholesale prices to designers. They will even do the low quantities you are looking for (invites always have low quantities). His Name is Greg.
I am sure there are smaller offset shops up there, but i don't know of any.
Just to let you know, i had 250 8.5x11 sheets printed 2/0 and it only cost me $114. And this was one PMS color and Spot Black offset.
- that price included the nice Classic Crest Card Stock.capn_ron

The other option is to find someplace that has an Epson or Canon inkjet that prints high quality. We have an Canon iPF5100 that does this sort of high end inkjet printing.

in my experience letterpress hasn't been that expensive
- I do it all the time and can vouch it is pricey. Especially if you do more than one color.capn_ron

Great! Thank you guys. I just got an email from my sis, she also wants me to consider silkscreening them. I have a kit, it's doable but will take awhile. Anyho, this is great, I will look into it. $114 is way below our budget :)
- I know, that's what I said when i got that job printed.capn_ron

LT Litho in Irvine is where I had mine printed. Wasn't to expensive at all.
Overall it was $300 for invites and rsvp cards. About 150 w/ a 2 color offset print on thicker stock.
