I have noticed that a malfunctioning Time Machine can generate lots of log files, in fact it completely filled up one client's machine. You may have had some such administrative clutter which was cleared out during the upgrade.
Keep an eye on disk space, if you find it free space going down w/o activity on your part look for causes.

bottom line; snow leopard does not trim 50gb.
you lost some unnecessary baggage somewhere. would be good idea to figure it out so your clean system doesn't get all bloated again.

Did you have lots in the Trash? Forget to install developer tools?

Snow Leopard is supposed to reclaim around 6gb of space over Leopard. It is a slimmer OS.
Also I understandthat Snow Leopard reads data as 1kb = 1000 bytes instead of 1024 bytes. This recalculation definitely makes your HD and free space appear larger. My 320gb drive now reads as 320.7gb, which is interesting.
