Spec work?

aka "prototyping?"
Lots of agencies/shops do that.

Non-profit work?

if it helps with new business, and generates income generating work, than that happens. (though its not necessarily advisable.)

one part of my brain agrees with the getting paid part. the other says it defies all logic and i should always be worried about getting canned because some numbers guy looks at my profitabilty and might not see any.
my work might generate income, it might not. but certainly a shop doesn't devote 100% of their time working on stuff that they'll give away, which is what it certainly seem like in my case.
i should just suck it up and worry more about the creative and less about the risk management. ignorance is bliss, yeah?

Well look at it this way. If there's no budgets then there are no constraints and therefore no reason to anything but the most absurdly amazing work ever known to grace this world... :D

Don't worry, I just forwarded this thread to your boss. I think they might be able to clear things up.
- M_C_P0
thanks ukit but if i'm going out, i'm gonna take a big shit on his desk instead. no point in subtlety at that point.

your boss is aware of that too, he's saran-wrapping his desk right now
