I lived in Angel for a while and the ratio of fine as to complete uggos was very pleasant around there! And some nice bars too.

Kentish Town hands down. It has decent pubs, good independent book shop, organic grocer, local sports shop, young people but with a low hipster ratio, some good old locals, close to Hampstead Heath, close to Camden, 2 overland stations as well as underground, a couple decent cafés and a couple good spots for live music. What more do you want?

maybe i shouldn't have said anything about williamsburg. Let me start over. I'll be seein the sights, mostly museums and the like, so i want to stay in a place thats generally close to all that fun stuff but also an interesting to place to kick around in after i've done all my touristy crap. I'm hoping for a cheap hotel in an area where i'm not gonna get fucked with for being a bloody tourist, but still maybe hear some live music.
