Hey all. I'm heading to London for a week and wonder which area is most interesting. I'm not into the uppity scene. Kinda just like an area that artsy and cool, maybe see some music. Maybe the London's equivalent of Brooklyn's Williamsburg or Manhattan's Lower East Side. Thoughts?

brick lane people watching /market only happens on sunday. and 99% on london shuts by 11pm. Hackney is the equiv redhook, but much less to do at night. Hoxton Square is like lower east side just a bit cheesier.
- 99% London shuts by 11pm?

- Eh? How is then that I manage to stay out far too late every weekend? If you know where, you can stay out all night in London.

Just bus it from Brick Lane up Shoreditch High Street and Kingsland Road up to Dalston and get off at almost every stop on the way and you'll get hipster artsy galleries and trendy bars a plenty.

Yeah Dalston or Hackney is great if you like poverty porn.

I do love the way these threads descend into territorial pissings though. I wonder if everyone just decides to go to France (sorry, "Europe") instead.

Last time I got a bus into Dalston all I found was a car crash, a fenced-off street with a dude rolling around in it, and Skt. In a pub. Loosing control of his faculties.
If I'd bought me camera, I could have got a book deal with TASCHEN.

Dalston and upwards is one of the fastest growing "trendy" weekend club areas, with Jazz Bar and Barden's Boudoir and Passing Clouds and that "gay" bat that's far from gay.
I've lived and hung out in and around Dalston for years and I've never been shot or stabbed.
Hackney on the other hand...

Dalston is in Hackney - innit?
@schjetne - you mean the "Dalston Superstore"?

Try Stoke Newington.
It's next to Dalston. Go down Church Street and soak it all up.
It's one of my favourite parts of London...... and I just moved there.
