Is it really the best tool to remove a background in PS? Is it worth mastering it? It seems to be wasting a lot of my time at the moment.
Is there a better/smarter way?

it's another tool to add to the arsenal. I find it works great for quick jobs on flat backgrounds (nothing too busy or you'll have more work than you bargained for). Of course anything you need to be done perfectly, you need to take the time and obsess over a little bit.
It doesn't take much time to know the ins and outs of the extractor, but I'd say it's definitely worth learning.

I always liked Mask Pro instead of Mask. Thanks to version3 for showing me that app.

Theres a couple different ways to erase the background.
I guess it all depends on the image.I used to think the pen tool was the only real way to do it but I was dead wrong.
The "Background Erase Tool" has really saved my ass a couple times.
